Today Mr. Bruns continued doing his power point. After Poland was taken, Great Britain and France declare was on Germany September 3. This war was called the phony war, sitzkrieg (sitting war) because nothing really happened. In 1935 the U.S. started passing a bunch of neutrality acts to try to stay out of the war. We would not trade with countries at war, then in 1937 it changed to the cash and carry system. You had to pay cash and you had to come get it and take it back with your own ship. This was mainly to help GB and China.

Around the late 1930’s the Tripartite Pact was signed naming the axis powers. Germany, Italy, Japan were the three main powers in the Axis. GB, China, France, U.S., Soviet Union were the main Allied powers. Germany attack Norway and Denmark and they were both pretty easy.

Winston Churchill became the prime minister of GB in 1940. Germany wanted to attack Belgium then go around and take France. Germany had offensive attack and France had a defensive attack. France had made the Maginot Line so it was harder for the Germans to get through, but it stopped before Belgium, so the Germans just went around it. Hitler didn’t have to worry about the Soviet Union while fighting France because they signed the Non-Aggression Pact. The French surrendered in a month on June 22, 1940.

The Miracle of Dunkirk was when Germany pushed France to Dunkirk along the sea. The Germans were told not to go into Dunkirk to wait for the tanks. Because the Germans waited 100,000s of British and French soldiers were able to escape.

GB was the only Allied power country left that wasn’t in any neutrality pact, as the Soviet Union was. Hitler’s goals were to by September 15, 1940 invade GB, but first they had to destroy the GB air force and navy. They wanted to attack British troops, they never had full control of the air. Because of that they bombed GB every single night to break them down so they would surrender. The British new where and when the Germans were going to come in, Ultra (knowing the German code). GB was never going to surrender.
