Lubna Hussein, a journalist from Sudan, was convicted for violating the public indecency law in Sudan. She faces a $200 fine just for wearing pants outside. Even though she has to pay the fine, she did not get the flogging penalty. Flogging is the act of whipping the human body for punishment. Lubna was facing around 40 lashes for wearing her pants outside. This case is generating interest inside and outside of Sudan. She is one of the first women to ever fight against the law and go to court to defend herself.
She is planning on appealing the sentence because she believes that she has the right to wear pants wherever she wants. Sudan is a country located in Africa that is run by a partly Islamic government. The Islamic government has a strict law that forces woman to dress modestly. Lubna said that she would rather go to jail than pay the fine. She says it would give her a chance to experience what it is like to be in jail.She was one of the 13 women arrested on July 3rd for wearing pants. Ten of these women decided not to go to trial and were fined and flogged two days later. Lubna and two other women decided to go against the law and seek a fair trial. Lubna and these two other women are brave to go against a law that isn’t fair to the women of Sudan.I think that this is a very interesting story. Lubna, in my opinion, is one of the bravest women I have ever read about in the news because she is going against a harsh law in a country led by an Islamic government. She is also brave because she would take 40 lashes just to have the law changed so other women don’t have to live in fear. She knew the law and still wore pants because she feels she has the right. That is what makes her one of the bravest women I have heard about.
i think that she is doing the right thing by going to court against this law. People should be able to wear what they want when they want no matter where you live. hopefully she gets the law changed for other women.
