Top ten events of the decade. (Assigned blog 2)

1) First African American President: The inauguration of Barack Obama was held on January 20, 2009. He became the 44th president of the United States. His acceptance speech was delivered to around 75,000 supporters and viewed by more than 38 million people world wide.

2) 9/11: On the morning of September 11, 2001 nineteen terrorists hijacked four different jet airliners. They crashed two of these four planes into the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers in New York City. The crash killed everyone on board and many others that were working in and around the buildings.

3) Hurricane Katrina: On August 23, 2005 a hurricane formed around the Bahamas and made its way across southern Florida. This hurricane was named Katrina and was rated as a moderate Category 1 hurricane. Katrina caused a lot of severe damage along the Gulf coast to Texas and central Florida. The most severe of all the damage took place in New Orleans, Louisiana where everything flooded.4) Iowa Smoke Free Air Act: In the spring of 2008, the lawmakers in Iowa made a ban to prohibit smoking in all public and enclosed areas and some outside areas as well. This legislation was passed to protect all employees and the general people of the public. It is applied to restaurants, outdoor entertainment events, health care facilities, and even bars. In my opinion this law is great!

5) H1N1 Virus: The World Health Organization declared that the new type of Swine/H1N1 influenza pandemic, in June of the year 2009. It was marked a phase 5 pandemic and was the first pandemic since the year 1999. In November there was almost 10,000 declared dead from this influenza.6) King of Pop Dies: At his home in Holmby Hills, Los Angeles, California, Michael Jackson was found dead on June 25, 2009. He suffered from cardiac arrest. Paramedics tried but failed to treat him at his home. He was pronounced dead at the Ronald Reagan Medical Center. The Los Angeles County Coroner has a statement released to the public saying that his death was homicide. This was supposedly caused by the combination of drugs already in his system.

1)7) Christmas Bomber: On Christmas day 2009, a man by the name of Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab attempted to blow up the aircraft he was on as it was landing in Detroit. The bomb was hidden in his underwear. Luckily the explosive never did go off. The man was caught when his seat started on fire. Although this leaves us all wondering if our airport security system can ever be too safe.

8) Von Maur Mall Shooting: On December 5, 2008, a man with a rifle that was camouflaged shot many people at the Westroads mall in Omaha, Nebraska. The shooter was only nineteen years old and killed eight people.9) Facebook was Invented: Sometime in the year 2004 a social networking site named Facebook was invented by a class of undergraduate at Harvard University. It was led by Mark Zuckerberg and first called Harvard Facebook for the students in the school to communicate with other students. Today, Facebook is used by just about everyone to chat, upload pictures, and post statuses of what you are up to.

10) Tiger Woods Affairs: On December 11, 2009 the famous professional and American golfer Tiger Woods announced that he would quit golfing indefinitely so that he could take time to work on his marriage. Since his affairs with many different women came into the light and he was fired from many different campaigns.I got most of my information from Wikipedia and Google Images.
