Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, the prohibiting of sex discrimination in educational institutions that receive federal funds, it basically protects against discrimination in college and high school athletics. Since the law’s enactment, girls’ and women’s scholarships, participation, and their share of the athletics budgets have grown immensely. Title IX word for word states, "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."
Though many people haven't heard of the law Title IX. Most people who do know about Title IX think it only applies to girls being allowed in generally boy sports, but athletics is only one of 10 key areas stated by Title IX. These areas consist of: Access to Higher Education, Career Education, Education for Pregnant and Parenting Students, Employment, Learning Environment, Math and Science, Sexual Harassment, Standardized Testing and Technology. The education part of the law is pretty much overlooked but the fact that it affects boys as much as it does girls. It now allowed boys and girls to take more classes and have more choice of the education field they wanted to go in. It opened up brighter futures and better careers for both genders.
Title IX’s impact on women’s participations in athletics is one of the country’s greatest civil rights success stories, that changes the playing field dramatically for girls and women in nearly all sports. One year before the law came into effect, in 1971, 8 percent of high school athletes were young women. But by 2008, nearly 40 years later, 41 percent of high school athletes were girls.
In addition to the law changing girl participation it also opened the door for women coaches, administrators, and support staff in both high schools and colleges nationwide. It also provided a future to those student athletes to participate in their sport as the doors were open for coaching and other positions traditionally held by men.
Title IX has changed our countries few on the different genders in sports and education. It caused many inspirational men and women to be who they are today and will cause many more men and women to give hope and inspiration to other people.
