Today we went over the new maps again and then continued to watch the Thomas Friedman Video.

  1. Describe what the “flat world” means before watching the lecture?

It means that our technology is getting more advanced and we are able to communicate with people from all over the world and compete with them for things like jobs.

2. Briefly describe Globalization 1.0.

Lasted from 1492 to early 1800s. It shrink the size of the world go from large to medium. People went over to other countries for colonization, resources, etc. to make money for their home country.

  1. Briefly describe Globalization 2.0.

Early 1800s to 2000. It made the size of the world go from medium to small. People begin globalizing from their companies.

4. Briefly describe Globalization 3.0.

It will shrink the world from size small to tiny and flatten the global economic scale and individuals will start globalizing.

5. What was the Berlin Wall a flattener of the world?

It allowed us to see and think of the world as a single flat plain. There was no longer a “wall” separating the world.


  1. What was the importance of Netscape going public on 8-9-95?

It really brought the internet alive so that everybody could use it and not just scientists or military and hospital personnel. It allowed people to be able to communicate better than ever before. The world got even smaller because now you could find information about anything and everything straight from your home computer.



7. What is outsourcing/offshoring and why are many Americans opposed to it?

Offshoring is where a company in America would shut down and open up again in another country like China or India because it’s cheaper. Outsourcing is very similar. People are against it because it takes away people’s jobs.

  1. Give two examples of “open-sourcing”.

Linnex and Mozilla Firefoz. An example that we are more familiar is Wikipedia because anyone can add to it.
