Soviets invade Afghanistan
The Republic of Afghanistan was a government. It was very dependent on the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union supported Marzism which was a government of the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan. Mujahedeen found support from like the U.S., United Kingdom, Sudi Arabia, Pakistan, Egypt and other Muslim countries.
They invaded on Dec. 27, 1979. The Soviets planned to take over President Hafizullah Amin. Leonid Brezhnev was the leader of the Soviet Union. They invaded so they could spread communism. It was referred to as Soviets Vietnam or the "shooting war". It lasted ten years. They had an opperation and it was named Trojan Horse.
Opperation Trojann Horse was a planned attack to take out the president. They executed him and the members of his family. They acused him of crimes against the people. They then took over the capital. The troop withdrawal started on May 15,1988. It ended on February 15,1989.
Why the U.S. won and the Soviets lost.

-spent all their money on their army

- the Cold War was officially over at a meeting in Malta.
