Today was another work day. I continued to read my chapter and learned that because that so many people had migrated that living conditions had become very poor. Due to unsafe drinking water they got cholera and typhoid fever and there also was no sanitation. Susage flowed through open streets, no dependable trash collection, factories let tons of chemicals into the air. There were also many fires including the Great Chicago Fire.
During this time the Social Gospel movement was established which tried to get people to help the poor out. They also set up settlement houses in slum neighborhoods that helped people in poor living conditions. Jane Addams was probably one of the most important person in settin up these houses.
