Today in class I learned that some of the problems in the late 1800's are that they were cramped, old, dirty housing. There was a lack of transportation. Slums were like poor apartment buildings. They would hang things off there telephone wires. The insides of these apartments were small and cramped. They had dirt floors. There were rats that would bite babies and it would end up killing them. They didn't have cars so they had horses for transportation. Fire occurred very often. The Gilded Age was from 1870-1890's. It was called this because on the outside it was covered with gold and it looked good but on the inside it wasn't so good because they rich people were trying to overpower the poor. The Spoils System caused a lot of problems. President Hayes and Garfield tried to reform the government. People that got government jobs they would have to take tests to make sure that they were worthy of having this position. President Garfield was shot and assassinated by Charles J. Guiteau. He was the second president to be assassinated, after Lincoln. Andrew Johnson took over for Lincoln. He was a democrat. Grant was a two termed president during the civil war and he was the worst president in history.I don't think that it would be very fun at all to live in nasty homes like that. I mean I can't even go one day without taking a shower so there is no way I would ever be able to survive back then! I couldn't even imagine how people could live like that. Also, I'm like deathly afraid of rats and there is no way I could ever be around them.
