Today we are continuing with presentations.Ch. 8.1 Science and Urban LifeThe first skyscraper was built in the years 1880-91 with Louis Sullivan, and it was called WainWright building. They were able to build skyscrapers because they used steel, and that was more durable. The Electric Transit was like a trolley. Richmond, Virginia was the first city to have it through the whole city. The Brooklyn Bridge was the first bridge made with steel cable suspension. Olmstead was a landscape architect, and he planned urban parks and planned Central Park in NYC. It had tennis facilities, a zoo, bicycle paths, and a boating place. Olmstead also planned Washington D.C. and the St. Louis Arch. In 1890, the literacy rate to 90%. Books, magazines, and newspapers were growing demands.What advances in science and technology help solve urban problems?-skyscrapers- steel, and they could build up, and not out, electric street cars- could live far away, entertainment, travel quicker, and tourism, Olmstead- places look nice and tourists, bridges connected cities, and the printing-reading materials which helped education.Ch. 8.2 Expanding Public EducationHow did education change in the late 1800's and early 1900's?-At first, mostly it was elementary and middle school, and high schools started more in the 1900's. Back then, school would last three months and have the rest of the year off.
