Today in history Bruns gave us lots of statistics on how our classes did on the oral tests. We also are starting our presentations.Ch. 5 Sec. 1 - Cultures Clash on the PrairieWhite men thought Indians were savages and barbarians. Horses and buffalos were very important to them, and they used horses to travel and buffalo as food. Indians lived with extended families and were very close with family. They shared land with one another, boys were trained to be men and kids were taught through story-telling and legends. Settlers moved west on wagons and railroads because of gold/silver/riches, adventure, farming, sheep herding and cattle ranching, and to escape probelms (debts, outlaw). The Great Plains was used as a reservation for Indians in 1834. Assimilation was trying to make the Indians like white people. Gov't pushed Native Americans out of land (Great Plains), the Dawes Act gave land to Indians to farm, but failed because white people stole it back from them by buying it, they went to war, and killed many buffalo.
