Today we are starting Chapter 10 blog discussions and start learning the main things in chapter 10.Isolationism is when we tried to stay out of problems of other countries. Why the U.S. was isolating:-We wanted to avoid foreign wars and we had a weak army and navy.-The U.S. had to build themselves up first, as in industry, gov't, and internal imporovemnts (canals, roads, schools, transportation).-We had to deal with the issue of slavery with the Civil War and Reconstruction.-The two oceans kept us geographically isolated with a lack of technology.-We also had "the west" to settle.-The U.S. had a vast number of natural resources.-The U.S. tried to follow President Washington's advice saying we should stay out of foreign wars and alliances.Chapter 10 America Claims an EmpireU.S. Taking HawaiiWe got involved in Hawaii because of missionaries (to Christianize Hawaiins) and sugar cane plantations. Sugar was important, and U.S. controlled the land, and it was imported to U.S. Also, the sugar was tariff free. The McKinley Tariff raised tariffs and the free tariff was taken away. This angered the American plantation owners, so they wanted the U.S. to annex them so they didn't have to pay taxes, but Hawaiians did not. The American plantation owneres forced the king to give voting rights to just them, and not the native Hawaiians. They became part of the country in 1898 under McKinley, a state in 1959.
