We are continuing with Ch 9 blogs.12. What were the progressive’s philosophy on tariffs? Describe the Federal Reserve System.-Tax was at 6% which is way less than what it is today. Federal Reserve is a system of banks. It is called the banker’s bank (banks bank here). Woodrow Wilson created it. There are 12 main Fed banks and 25 branches. Banks went to the Fed to get money for their own banks. People would run to the banks to get their money before it closed.13. Describe the impact aid organizations had on our country.-Before the P.A., there were not many aid organizations. Churches and individuals were the only source of helping others. Social Gospel and settlement houses helped individuals who were in need, such as immigrants. Social Gospel Movement was when Christians came together and helped others because they thought it was their duty. YMCA was the Young Men’s Christian Association. It provided social services and sports and recreation for people. It had a library and was a place for people to go. The Salvation Army fed poor people. They had a soup kitchen in which they just fed poor people soup. The Mercy Home for Girls and Boys was a place for abused and homeless children in Chicago.15. What/who were muckrakers and what impact did they have on our country?-Muckrakers tried to expose businesses that tried to form monopolies or tried to get rid of other businesses. Teddy Roosevelt was the one who got the term to stick with people. Ida Tarbell was a muckraker who wrote a book on the Rockefeller’s oil company. She wrote about how he got rid of competition. Lincoln Stevens wrote an article about corruption in cities, such as the political machines (voting). P. 326-7. Upton Saint Claire wrote a book called The Jungle. It was about the conditions that immigrants had to work in. It also was about what goes into the meat and food people ate. They educated people what was really going on in our country, and it led to laws that helped these issues.
