Today we continued our presentations.14. What is socialism? How was it started in the United States?Socialism is where the government tried to make every thing equal, such as businesses. It started because the immigrants came to the United States and the poor wanted it more equal. Socialist despised Capitalist because they were for the rich. They also believed that the rich people would be in control of everything. In the 60's it died out because of the Cold War. THere is a socialist party today. The Democratic Socialist party, they want it more equal for everybody.15. What/who were muckrakers and what impact did they have on our country?A muckraker is someone who exposes issues. Today we call them investigative journalists. They tried to show the wrongings of the society and show it to people. The term was first used by Theodore Rosavelt. He said how muckrakers take a rake and rake up all the muck. People wrote books that exposed things. Such as oil and working enviroments and what's in our foods and blah blah blah. Today people are still exposing things to the people. Lincoln Stevens, Idon Tirel, Upton Sinclar were examples. They exposed things and it led to certain things like laws and acts. It helped bring on legislation on the congress.17. Describe the major social changes that affected women during the Progressive Era.Woman didnt work and when they worked they worked long hours. They were usually single. A rich woman wouldnt have worked. Only poor woman, they would work in factories and such to take care of the kids. The 14 ammendment said that woman could vote. Woman started forming groups that other woman would join and hope to stop woman not working and getting better jobs and better wages. Woman started graduating college, they were usually the ones who led the sufferage movement. They got through to better jobs and now today they can vote now. There is no difference in the working hours but men get paid more than women on average.18. What did local government do to reform itself during the Progressive Era?
