A political strategic and ideological struggle between the US and the Soviet Union

West Democratic
North Communist
South Democratic
Communism(government runs everything) vs. Democracy (people get a say)
Socailism( government runs businesses) vs. Capitalism(people run their businesses)

The cold war got its name bc there was never any armed or also known as "hot" conflicts
Cause 1
After WW2 the alliance between the US, GB, adn USSR had ended. This created a huge rivalry between the non-communists and the communist
The US is a non-communist and the USSR is an communist gov. Right off the bat they did not agree with each other
Cause 2
Germany was split up into four sections, GB, France, USSR and the US all controlled these zones
They all had trouble agreeing on this and that is what marked the start of the Cold War
Cause 3
The USSR was ver yupset when they found out that we had been secretly making an atomic bomb that we dropped on Japan
Cause 4
The US wanted to be able for countries to trade all around the world
Russia did not want this bc they thought that it would bring them into western influences that would weaken them
Cause 5
After WW2 had ended there was major competirion on who was most powerful
Then went to The Policy of Containment

Our goal was to contain communism and not let it spread
Truman doctrine- Greece and Turkey
was a strategy to contain cummunism
Truman on March 12, 1947
The long telegram was a speech on a good way to handle things so communism would not spread
was the first containment doctrine made

speech that Truman gave after that said that world had been split in two
Domino Effect
When one country would become communist it would topple over and effect another country to become communist
