Today we began watching Hotel Rwanda. I think that it is a pretty good movie but it would be very confusing to someone who didn't know about the main conflict prior to watching it. The main thing going on right now is about a Hutu man named Paul who doesn't want any part in the Hutu/Tutsie conflict and discrimination. When Hutu rebels start ransacking his hometown of Kigali (also the capital) Paul's main concern is to protect his family, however he runs into some major problems. His neighbors run to his house when soldiers come looking for Tutsies. The soldiers discover that many of the people hiding with Paul are in fact Tutsies, including his wife, and threaten to kill them all. Paul and the other people give the soldiers every bit of money and valuables that they have with them in order to stay alive and be let go. Paul then takes his family and friends with him to the hotel where he works and allows them to stay in the rooms until the whole conflict has blown over. About 20 Tutsie orpahans also come to the hotel seeking refuge and Paul finds himself obligated to keep everyone safe. That is as far as we got today and we will continue with the movie tomorrow.
