Presentations. Reagan ran his election under the terms of anti communism, arsenal and military buildup, and taking matters into our own hands. The Soviets had built up their arsenal quite a bit and this upset the balance that we had against them. Reagan wanter to build our military to better defend ourselves. Much of this went into satellite and space based programs which allowed us to better defend against and fight off enemy missiles that were launched at us.
Interceptor missiles were also put into effect which could destroy nuclear missiles in the air before they can reach the country. Laser testing was also tested. The idea was to shoot a laser into space to be relayed to a satellite and then the satellite could shoot the laser accurately down to earth to target enemy weapons. The Soviet Union didn't like this because it allows us to fire any missiles and effectvely fighting the Soviet Union or other countries, but when they attack us, we can defend against them and still be safe while still being able to fire at them.
Soveit involvmentwith invading Afghanistan. The invasion started December 24, 1979. The Afghan government did not like retaliation from Afghan rebels. The military could not adequately fight the rebels. They sought help from the Soviets to destroy the rebel movemnet,. The Soviets basically took over the cities, roads, and everything else. The rebels fought a jihad against the Soviets. The Soviets horribly destroyed the country with bombings, and destruction of infrastructure and civilian killings.
The US and other anticommy countries provided money, weapons and some support to Afghanistan. The Rebels then turned into the Taliban that roam the country today. The rebels were not very well organized. They had over 200,000 militants and they fought basically guerilla warfare. THe Soviets suffered 36,000 casulaties while the rebels lost 75,000. The civilian death toll from bombings and destruction was a couple million.
Tghe US, France, GB, and other nations provided missles, planes, weapons, and other instruments of war. Soviet troops took over cities; business, homes, and anything else. The rbels kept the Soviets on edge 24/7. The exit period was a two year period in which the Soviets began to leave the country. After 10 years of fighting, the Afghan government started taking charge. The Soviets never compltetely left. The Afghan government has basically collapsed and was taken over by the Taliban and which is with Al Queada which we are fighting today.
This occupation crippled the Soviet Union. This whole occupation gave us an opportunity to equip the Taliban with the weapons that they are using to fight against us. I still stand by my views and beliefes that we need to keep on hammering the Taliban and Al Queada until they are nothing but dust to the wind. We cannot tolerate such a threatening group to do whatever they want and to threaten peace and freedom in our world.
