This act essentially reformed the dawes act which broke up land and gave it to individual tribes. The Indian land went from 138 million acres in 1887 to 48 million acres in 1934 which is outrages. The U.S. government basically gave the tribal governments another chance to reorganize themselves, hence the name Indian reorganization act. The ‘white fold’ did researches on the native Americans and how they were doing and found out that the Indians had ultimately reached the grit of their lives. Many of them were living in the slums and had an eroded lifestyle. The Indian reorganization act was also known as the wheeler-howard act. Americans came up with an official definition for “Indians” and “Tribes.” The definition for Indians is the aboriginal people of America, and the definition of tribe is an aggregate of people descending from their ancestors. This act also provided native Americans with the same rights and abilities of the common American. It allowed them to go to school and start their own corporations. In the earlier years we placed the Indians on reservations and by doing this we took Indians that were formerly enemies and forced them to live on the same reservation with each other. It just didn’t work out and they always fought. This is another reason why they are so poor and living in slums.
