Today Mr. Bruns talked about our next blog assignment. Our blog topic is to pick an African American that has effected American or history, because it is black history month. He also showed us how to get to the New Deal test questions on the History page. Sam was the first to go today and his topics were the Reconstruction Finance Corporation(RFC) and the National Labor Relations Act(Wagner Act)(NLRB).

RFC

The RFC was passed July 21, 1932 by president at the time Hoover. FDR later became president and continued it. The RFC gave money to small businesses, banks, state governments and they could give out loans to people to give jobs. It basically helped give jobs to the unemployed.

National Labor Relations Act(Wagner Act)(NLRB)

Passed on July 5, 1933. This act prohibited unfair labor practices, for example, long hours of working, unsafe conditions at work, and firing people for joining labor unions. Succesful untill 1947 when congress passed the Taft-Hartly Act, which set restrictions on unions.

Kelsey went second today. Her two topics are Civilian Conservation Corps(CCC) and Fair Labor Standards Act(FLSA).

Civilian Conservation Corps(CCC)

Established in early 1933. Most who joined the CCC were unemployed and they were enlisted into a peacearmy. 18 through 26 year old men was the age range of men who joined. The crime rate reduced 55% after men started joining the CCC. The requirements to join were, ages 18-26, unmarried and unemployed, and you had to be a citizen of the U.S. Benefits of the CCC were... the men recieved 30 dollars every month, families recieved 25 dollars per month. The men were offered an education, they learned how to read and write. Over 90% of men participated in educational activities. The CCC built over 97,000 miles of road, over 3 billion trees were planted, kept people out of trouble, it helped the U.S. recover from the Dust Bowl. In 1939 the CCC lost its independance as an agency. The congress funded it for only two more years.

Fair Labor Standards Act(FLSA)

Today people did their presentations. Ray went first today and his two topics are Workers Progress Administration and The Three R's.

The WPA

The WPA helped feed children, give out clothing and houses to the poor. The WPA helped people learn and get jobs. It gave you the job that you wanted and helped you get supplies for your job. It provided at least 1 million people with work. Music, theatre, sculptures, and murals, basically any type of art was the kind of jobs the PWA gave out. This was one of the best new deal projects.

The Three R's (Relief, Recovery, Reform)

Relief- In 1933 they started a baking holiday. Money was given to build schools, roads, and buildings. Relief for the poeple.

Recovery- The Federal Housing Act helped older homes. The Federal Securitys Act gave the government the right to look into the stock market and figure out how it crashed and what went wrong. Helped kids stay in school and go to college. .

Reform- Reform the banks and economic systems.Made sure banks were recovering and doing alright. Wages and hours were set for jobs.

Jackie went next and her two topics are Civil Works Administration and Franklin D. Roosevelt.

CWA

Created in 1933. It was an organization that lasted for six months. It helped people get jobs building bridges, roads ect. They spent way to money in this Act and thats why it didn't last very long. It gave people jobs but wasn't necessarily succesful.

FDR FDR was born Jan 30, 1882. He died April 12, 1945. He was the 32nd president. Elected in 1932. What was the New Deal(1st and 2nd) and it's goals(3 R's)? Why did people criticize the New Deal? Why was FDR upset with the US Supreme Court and what did he do to try to solve this issue?
