Today in U.S. history:Mexican/American War:Mexico and United States fought it, and America won and paid $18 million dollars for half of Mexico- Cal. Nev. Wyoming. Mexico did not like this at all. Took place because of Manifest Destiny, expanding our borders (more land). Wasn't a justified war, U.S. invaded Mexico to the Rio Grande, Mexico then invaded U.S. Loss 1,700 Americans in battle in this war.Lincoln's Presidency:President during the Civil War (1861-1865). Ended slavery and made Emancipation of Proclimation, which tried to free slaves in the south. Gettysburg Address was given after the battle at Gettysburg, which was a funeral speech about people who died in battle. South didn't like Lincoln because he didn't like slavery, states could keep slaves, but could not have them in the new land. Thirteenth ammendment officially ended slavery. Died right after civil war.Civil War:North (Union) and South (Confederates) fought it. Fought between 1861-1865, and Americans won. Americans had more soldiers, resources, and mostly everything- states, population, railroad mileage, factories, and farm acreage. The south known for having better generals. Jefferson Davis was the Confederate president.Reconstruction:1865-1877, the rebuilding of the south after the war. Rebuilding (cities, railroads) and social was what was done. 13th ammendment abolished slavery, 14th ammendment was everyone born in the U.S. had rights (black people), and 15th ammendment minority man the right to vote. Freedman's Bureau, designed to help educate, job train, and give jobs to African Americans. After 1877, south went back to being racist, and was not treating them fairly. Military was in south trying to keep order. Northerners moved south to keep the south out of government so it wouldn't go back to the old ways. Southerners not happy, and there were lots of crime. Republicans got the presidency so the Northerns would move back, was what the Southerners agreed to.These are the final topics of the 8th grade review blogs, and I think this stuff is coming back to our hard-drive!
