Today we continued with blog discussions.
*Describe the differences between the New England, Middle, and Southern colonies: New England colonies were more industrialized and had banks and other businesses. The Middle colonies had farming and shipping. The South was mainly dependent on agriculture, especially tobacco and indigo.
*Describe the causes and effects of the Revolutionary war: This war was between America and the British. The British started taxing the American colonies because they needed more money after the French and Indian war. The colonies slogan was "No taxation with out representation." They felt that if they were going to be taxed, that they should get represented in the British Parliament which was like our Congress today. The effects were that Great Britain was forced out of America into Canada and we won our independence.
*Describe the purpose of the Declaration of Independence: It basically tells the British King George the 3rd that America has the right to break away from Great Britain and become independent and lists all of the terrible things had he was making us do.
*Describe the set up of the Ariticles of the Confederation and why it failed as a government: It was the first government of the United States after the Revolutionary war. It was set up so that the states had most of the power and they were almost like they're own little countries. It failed because the states had all of the power and the federal government had not money and the states refused to give them some. They also had no court system.
*Describe what the U.S. Constitution does: The constitution sets up the U.S. into three branches of government, the executive, judicial, and legislative. The first 10 amendments are called the Bill of Rights and explain all of the rights that American's have. For the most part it protects people's rights and and sets up our government system
*Describe the early development of political parties: The first two political parties were the Federalists, led by John Hamilton and the Republicans/Democrats led by Thomas Jefferson. President Washington believed that the creation of political parties would be the downfall of the country but they were started anyways. Hamilton believed in a loose interpertation of the Constitution and that we didn't have to follow exactly what was written. Jefferson on the other hand was the exact opposite, believing that if something wasn't included in the Constitution, then we shouldn't be able to do it. Hamilton wanted the economy to be run by wealthy white men and businesses while Jefferson wanted it to be run by the common folks and focus heavily on agriculture to produce an income. In today's world, we see that Hamilton's ideas ended up coming true.
