Today Ian started his presentation and he had VJ Day which was victory over Japan. The US’s reasons for bombing Japan was because the Postdam Ultimatum was ignored, which was us telling them that we had a new weapon that was huge and that they should surrender. They didn’t believe us so we dropped the first bomb then the second. After the second they surrendered. Before the two nuclear bombs we fire bombed 67 cities. The two nuclear bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. They chose Hiroshima because it had the least cloud cover. All Japan cities were destroyed except for one. Japan surrendered because the two atomic bombs we dropped and Russia invading Manchuria. The day after the Hiroshima bomb Russia declared war on Japan. The two bombs were huge in size, the one dropped on Nagasaki they were worried about because they had it going while they were carrying it in the plane. They had to make a new plane to carry the bomb because it was so huge. The uranium bomb explodes out, the little boy, dropped on Hiroshima. The big boy bomb, plutonium bomb explodes in and sucks everything inward then explodes out. After Japan surrendered, many Japanese officers committed suicide. Starvation happened to the Japanese people after the war. After we bombed and destroyed Japan we helped rebuild them because if we didn’t the communists of Russia would and we didn’t want that.
Joseph went next and he had VE Day which was Victory in Europe day. The victory in Europe happened on May 8, 1945. It marked the end of the war in Europe, Americans and people all around the world were celebrating. Events that led up to VE day was Germany surrendering, Hitler’s suicide, and the concentration camps were found by Allied forces. At the end of the war sailors heard over European radios, Churchill gave a speech, and the King and Queen made many appearances.
Rey had The Yalta Conference. The big three were FDR, US-Churchill, GB- and Stalin, Soviet Union. Stalin was the strongest and his country was rising, FDR was dying of a heart condition, and Churchill was head of a dying empire. They met at the Black Sea Port City of Yalta. Roosevelt wanted to make a friendship with Stalin. Harry Truman replaced FDR, Clement Attlee replaced Churchill when he died. Stalin broke his agreement by letting European countries become communist. The basic points were, Germany would be split into four zones, each zone would be controlled by different countries. Stalin had agreed to allow free elections in the Eastern-European countries. We were afraid while they were pushing the Germans back to Germany he would take over the Eastern European countries. The Soviet Union also agreed to get in the war against Japan, which they did. They decided there would be another conference in San Francisco to set up the United Nations.
Kody went next and he had D-Day. They actually practiced for D-Day. The Atlantic Wall was set up to get ready for the invasion. The overall code name for D-Day was Operation Overlord. There was an air attack, 24,000 troops. We wanted Hitler to believe that we were going to attack the city of Clay, France. We actually attacked south of Clay. Eisenhower was the general for all of D-Day. They had to have a full moon and the tied was important too. They made obstacles for the US ships.
