Today we had a work day.
Guadalcanal, codenamed operation Watchtower, started on August 7 1942 when Allied forces landed on the islands of Guadalcanal, Tulagi, and Florida in the Solomon Islands. Their goal was to take them so the Japanese couldn’t use them to launch missions to attack vital supply lines. They were able to land on the islands and overwhelm the Japanese early on. They took Tulagi, Florida, and an airfield on Guadalcanal. The Japanese tried to launch counteroffensives to retake the field. After their last attempt to take the field in November was unsuccessful Japan withdrew from Guadalcanal on Februrary 7 1943. It marked the transition from Allied defensive strategy to offense.
