Today April finished the presentation on Italy.

1. How did the Treaty of Versailles impact them?

Promised that they were going to get a lot of land from the treaty, but they only got one or two of the ones that they were promised. Italy was extremely upset that they were not given any land.

2. What type(s) of government did this country have in the interwar years(1919-1938)?

Fascism was introduced in 1919. The idea of fascism was that violence and war was alright. They would use violence to keep the peace in the country. They would build up a strong military, it was also important to have colonies all over the world. They also were supposed to have strong pride in their country.

3. How did their leader, that led them throughout WWII, come to power?

In 1921 he was elected Chamber of Deputies. He was declared Prime Minister by the king. On July 10, 1924 Mussolini was declared dictator after the assassination of a writer. He slowly worked his way up until he became dictator. He was the leader from October 31, 1922 to July 25,1943.

4. How did this leader change their country(for the better and worse) prior to WWII?

He helped public transportation and job oppurtunities. Mussolini used his private army to fight anyone that was against fascism. Started on the Axis Powers in 1941, but switched to the allied powers in 1943. He started to invade countries so Italy would get stronger.

5. What were the goals of the leader?

He wanted to get colonies in Africa, so they could complete with Britain and France. He wanted to make Italy great, respected, and feared. He used the radio to tell people that the idea of fascism was okay.

6. What was the military strategy of this country in the inter-war years(1919-1938)?

They wanted to help Hitler and not overrun his rule. They wanted to keep supplies. The United States fought a lot in Italy. They kind of wanted to preoccupy the Allied Powers with tough fighting in Italy. Moussolini wanted to have control of the Meditterean Sea.

7. What role did they play in WWII?

At first they stayed in isolation. They wanted to help the Germans and Hitler. Not very many people in Italy cared about the war.

8. Who were their allies in WWII?

The Allies were German, Austria, Hungary, Japan, part of Yugoslavia, and the French Navy.

9. How did WWII impact/effect the country?

They lost all of their colonies. The Government pretty much collapsed because the Germans had invaded their country. The people of Italy hated Moussolii at the end of the war and killed him.

Next we went into Japan.

1. How did the Treaty of Versailles impact them?

Japan got a lot of Germany's Northern islands. They got land that Germany took from China which probably wasn't very fair. They got to be apart of the League of Nations.

2. What type(s) of government did this country have in the interwar years(1919-1938)?

They had a two party political system after World War II. In 1918 Hara Takashi became the first common person to become Prime Minister. In 1926 Hirihito became the emperor. They had mostly a consitutional monarchy which meant that the emperor did not have very much power. The Great Depression took them from a peaceful government, into a government that would invade countries so they could get the natural resources that they needed.

3. How did their leader, that led them throughout WWII, come to power?

Hirohito was the son of Prince yoshitito and Princess Sakado. When his Grandpa died he became Prince. His dad became sick with a mental illness, so he became the emperor. Hideki Tojo was the guy that decided to carry out Pearl Harbor.

4. How did this leader change their country(for the better and worse) prior to WWII?

Hirohito didn't really change the country. Hideki Tojo drastically changed Japan from a country that outlawed war, to a country that invaded Manchuria in 1931.

5. What were the goals of the leader?

The goals of the leaders wer to expand their boundaries into Asia. They wanted to invade these countries so they could get the natural resources that they needed.

6. What was the military strategy of this country in the inter-war years(1919-1938)?

The military strategy was an attack of Pearl Harbor. The wanted to gain natural resources and wanted to research chemical weapons. These weapons were illegal, but they didn't care. The treated the POW's very badly and would not feed them or treat them fairly.
