Today Mr. Bruns is gone so we are watching a World War II movie. On Sunday December 7, 1941, was the day that Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. Following the attack FDR asked Congress to approve a Declaration of War. After the United States declared war on Japan, Germany and Italy kept true to their alliance and declared war on the United States. After the Japanese invaded China in 1931, the United States stopped trading their oil and steel to them. After the attack on Pearl Harbor the Japanese started taking over numerous Pacific Islands.
During the WWII years the United States reaped a record breaking wheat harvest. Mexican workers came up and worked on the farms. New machinary also payed a big part in the harvest. The President also set up a War Production Board, that would make things that would be used in the war. People on the homefront were financially stable for the first time since the 1920's. 15 million people took part in the war, women also started to fight in the war. Most of the women did not go over seas. Some women trained men to fly fighter planes. By the end of a war 1/3 of the workforce was made up of women.
A lot of Native Americans served in the military. A group of Navajo people used their language to trick the Japan. Japan was never able to crack the Navajo language. Japanese Americans were forced to live in bad areas and lost all that they had earned. Most of them were actually born in the United States. They had a hard time convincing the governement that they weren't trying to sabotage the United States' war effort. On April 12, 1945 Roosevelt died. Seven days after Hitler committed suicide the Germans surrendered.
