12. What were the progressive’s philosophy on tariffs? Now we have a graduated income tax which means the more you make the more you pay. Describe the Federal Reserve System- system of banks that would preseve the amount of the dollar. Called the "Bankers Bank". Banks would go to these banks to get money to give to their people that put their money in the bank. In this time many people just went and got out all of their money and the banks wouldn't be able to cover everybody so the got a loan to cover everybody. Willson helped inprove tariff rates, but Taft said he was going to then didn't.13. Describe the impact aid organizations had on our country. Red Cross YMCA were never around before to help, there was churches and individuals. Social Gosple Christians that wanted to help poor people because they felt it was their duty and what God would want. Settlement houses. Young Mens Christian Accosiation, YMCA, provided social services and classes,libraries, sports, recreation. Salvation Army feed people, had soup kitchens. YMCA, Salvation Army, Mercy home for Boys and Girls in Chicago for child care of abused and homeless children, are some examples for today. The purpose of these were to help the poor people.15. What/who were muckrakers and what impact did they have on our country? Muckraker- Somebody who's trying to expose companies that are trying to put others out of bussiness, they'd investigate any social happening. Teddy R. gave them the name. There are muckrakers now but we don't call them that, it'd be more like news people. Ida Tarbell wrote a book on the standard oil company, Rockefeller, she was made because he set high rail rates, and exposed how he got rid of competition. Lincoln Stevens, had an article on coruption in different cities with political machines, how they didn't let people vote freely, and everything else that was going on. Upton Sinclar, exposed how bad meat industries was so discusting in the factory. They played a huge role in showing what was really going on in society and that improved conditions.-Breann Lehr
