8.1 Science and Urban LifeWhat advances in science and technology help solve urban problems?- Wain Wright Building was the first sky scaper, made by Louis Sullivan in 1880 and was finished in 1891. Sky Scrapers allowed cities to build up not out, they didn't have a lot of room so it they needed to be able to build up. Street cars, cable cars, and public transportation started to come about. Bridges made out of steel, Brooklyn Bridge was the first suspension bridge, it unified the cities. Nobody really thought about making cities attractive, but Olmstead came along (a city land scaper). In 1890 the litteracy rate went up 90%. Newspapers came up even bigger, they had papers more often than once a month like before.8.2 Expanding Public EducationHow did education change in the late 1800's and early 1900's?- They use to only go to school for about three months then were off for the rest of the year because they had to help on the farm. Minorities hard it harder, "Seperate but equal". High school was a slow process to grow into, then college was even slower but eventually it happened.-Breann Lehr
