5.1 Cultures Clash on the Praire- White men thought of Indians as savages and not peaceful at all. Horses and buffalo really effected the culture of the Natives. Family was very important and they respected the land and everything given by it. White people said that the Natives didn't own the land because they did nothing to modernize it. The Westward movent was because of gold, silver, farming, adventure, hunting, sheep herdding, ranching, debts, outlaws, and many other reasons. The government restricted the Natives from the land. There was a lot of tension between the settlers and the Natives because the Natives felt like they shouldn't be cooped up. Many whites tried to convert Natives to Chirsianity, process is called assimilation. Dawes Act gave land to individual Natives land that had been broken up off reservations. The whites ended up taking the land back, and giving the bad land to the Natives and they treated them badly.
