Today we had the first presentation. It was over Chapter 5 Section 1. This section was over the Native Americans. First Rachel began by showing us a Coup Stick. I learned that it is a stick that the Indians would use to poke a white man, and if they could run away after poking the man they would be able to put a feather onto the stick. I learned that the Native Americans believed in one spirit that would control everything in the universe. Next she began talking about what the different people in the tribe did. I learned that the men were the protectors and made the tools and weapons. The weapons were used when they got into a battle. Another thing that I learned about was that the women were the "homemakers' because they set up and took down tipi, cooked the food, gathered the firewood, berries, took care of younger Native Americans, made clothes, and took care of the hides of the animals.Next she bagan talking about what the younger Native Americans did in their tribe. I learned that the children usually learned from stories that were told by their grandparents. The different things that the kids did depended on their gender. I learned that the girls usually played with deerskin dolls in smaller Tipis, and the boys would play with bows and arrows, went on vision quests, and could go on their first hunt when they were 12 years old. Next we talked about the importance of the buffalo. I learned that Indians use everything from the buffalo, unlike the white men they would not leave anything unused. I also learned that the Indian followed the buffalo so that they could have food and supplies. I also learned today that the horses were brought of from Spain in 1540. I learned that they were called sacred dogs because dogs used to be used to carry things instead of horses.
