Today is Thursday. Hitler wanted to take out the Jews, but he was faced with the problems of how to do it. Hitler rounded up all Jews in Germany and shipped them out of the country to his concentration camps in other countries. Hitler would have the Jews work at the concentration camps where they would either be killed, or could work themselves to death.
He had no camps in Germany because most Germans would not support this mass genocide. Hitler used a lot of propaganda to convince people that the concentration camps that he was sending the Jews to were great camps where the Jews could live nicely and normally and could get an education and have fun. For a while, people actually believed this story and paid no more attention to the Jews that were uprooted and left their past life behind.
Back in the US, FDR signs the Lend-Lease Act in 1941. The Lend Lease Act was an act that modified the neutrality acts of the previous several years (which banned aiding or trading with countries at war). The Lend Lease Act made it legal for the United States to give goods, but not money to countries at war. We traded with the Allied powers.
The goods that we gave to the Allies were things like munitions, tanks, ships, trucks, bombs, and food, and stuff. This all changed after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Americans were furious and wanted war.
The German Invasion of the USSR: This was Hitler’s biggest mistake in the war. Hitler wanted to take land from Russia so that his perfect race of blonde haired blue eyed people could flourish. Hitler also hated communism which made Stalin and his USSR the target for land and a great defeat.
In the Battle of Stalingrad resulted in the death of over 2 million Soviet troops. The codename for the invasion of the Soviet Union was called Operation Barbarossa. The Germans in the North blockaded and laid siege to Leningrad. The troops starved the people of the city to death. Millions of people died from starvation.
Hitler was nearly able to capture three of the USSR’s biggest cities which would have ultimately ended in Russia’s defeat. The Germans however underestimated the Russians in their native homeland. Hitler did not think that the war would last until winter so he did not compensate for it. Once the winter set in, the Russians were in their own territory in their own environment. The Russian troops were then able to slowly push the Germans out of their land.
Hitler was a greedy fool for biting off so much more than he could chew. In my opinion, if Hitler would have stayed on the USSR’s good side, he may have defeated Great Britain. Oh well, I’m glad that he failed.
