Theodore Roosevelt, also know as Teddy Roosevelt, was born into a rich family in 1858. They all lived in New York at the time. As a child Teddy suffered from asthma. When he was a highschooler, Roosevelt was good at marksmanship and he did some horseback riding. Roosevelt went to Harvard for college. When he was there he boxed and also wrestled.
Roosevelt started off as a leader in New York politics. He served three years in a New York State Assembly. After that we became a police commissioner for New York. After he was finished with that Roosevelt became an assistant secretary of the U.S. Navy. This gave him much attention throughout the years.
After Roosevelt returned from the war he was elected the governor of New York. Later after that he then won the vice-presidency. In 1901, being only 42 years old, he became the youngest presidents ever. Roosevelt just looked at his presidency as being able to influence the media and shape legislature.
Roosevelt believed that not all trusts were bad. He tried to make them so that they were more fair to the people. Roosevelt was the one to settle the 1902 coal strike by bringing the mine operators to the white house and talking it over. Because Roosevelt did this from then on whenever a strike would happen to come up the Federal Government was expected to take over.Because of Roosevelt's enthusiasm and compromising skills he was able to persuade laws and policies to form benefiting public health and the environment. Teddy read the The Jungle by Upton Sinclair and felt as if he needed to do some major action. This lead to the pushing of the Meat Inspection Act. This act was dedicated to the strict cleanliness for meat packers and it made it so that inspectors had to come on and inspect the meat.Roosevelt also had a huge influence on conservation. John Muir was the one that persuaded president Roosevelt to set aside 148 million acres of forest reserves. Roosevelt also set aside 1.5 million acres of water-powered sites. Not only did he stop there he also set aside another 80 million acres of land. Roosevelt also helped develop several national parks and over 50 wildlife sanctuaries. After William McKinley was assassinated in 1901 Teddy then became president of the United States. At that time Teddy was known as a world leader. In 1904, Russia's Tsar Nicholas II declared war on Japan. Both countries were trying to get the control of Korea. Japan began winning many battles and was starting to feel pretty secure about Korea and Manchuria. Because of this, Japan began to run out of men and money. Therefore, the Japanese came to Roosevelt and asked him to try to make some peace negotiations with Russia. Teddy agreed to do this and in 1905 Japanese and Russian delegates came together in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Through our presidents kind personality eventually the opposing delegates were shaking each others hands. Roosevelt then came up with the Treaty of Portsmouth and that's how he won the Nobel peace prize in 1906.Sourceshttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodore_Roosevelthttp://millercenter.org/academic/americanpresident/roosevelthttp://www.whitehouse.gov/about/presidents/theodoreroosevelt
