Democrats:

  • Favor/Gun control is needed

  • Tougher background checks, ban assault weapons

Republican:

  • Oppose/Gun control is constitutional

  • 2nd Amendment: Right to bear arms

History of Gun Control Laws in US

  • Gun control of 1968 - Passed after the murder of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy. 
  • Brady Bill - passed by Bill Clinton

Gun Statistics

  • American has six times as many firearm homicides as Canada, and 15 times as many as Germany.
  • American has 4.4 percent of the world’s population, but almost half of the civilian-owned guns around the world
  • There is a mass shooting almost everyday in America; 238 days, 247 mass shootings
  • In states with more guns, more police officers are also killed on duty
  • Still, gun homicides (like all homicides) are declining.
  • Most gun deaths are suicides
  • Support for gun ownership has sharply increased since the early ‘90s

Republicans: Tougher gun control laws hurt good working citizens rather than criminals

So what can be done to lessen gun violence?

  • Ban on assault style weapons

  • Ban on high-capacity ammunition clips
