9-11 and the US War on Terror

  • 1.3 million lives have been lost as of March 2015 as a result of the US War on Terror (Not only US Lives)

  • We went to war in Afghanistan after the 9-11 attack

  • Al Qaeda started in the 1980s

  • The Taliban is the government of Afghanistan

  • They allowed the AL-Qaeda to train in Afghanistan

  • They didn’t allow women to go to school and were required to wear oppressing clothing

  • Why did we do to war with Afghanistan?

  • Most everyone supported the War in Afghanistan due to 9-11

  • Afghanistan was not focused on as much after the Iraq invasion in 2003.

  • President Obama wanted to focus more on Afghanistan instead of the Iraq War-Sent 30,000 more troops 12-2009

  • Started US to withdraw from Afghanistan in July 2011

  • Obama had hopes to be our of Afghanistan sometime in 2017

Every war since that is congress giving the President power to declare war (technically not a real declration of war)

  • The white house says that the prospect of a complete withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan by next year opened up, after the strife-torn nation’s President Mahdi Kazi to sign a security deal.

  • One thing we learned from Iraq is: Never leave too soon

  • After we left Iraq ISIS took over

  • Many favored Iraq War at first but criticized President Bush for messing it up

  • Wanted a defined exit strategy during the Bush years

  • President Obama withdrew all combat troops from Iraq in August 2010

  • All US forces were out of Iraq at the end of 2011

  • Left too soon? ISIS took over

-       Hillary voted for the war in Iraq

  • Admitted to mistakes in Iraq and said it was a tough fight

  • Hoped Iraq’s new government and people would eventually be stable enough for US withdrawal

  • President Bush pulled 8,000 troops out in late 2008/early 2009

  • President Bush stated 8-21-2006 that US would not leave Iraq “until the job is done”.

  • Former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has critizied Obama for leaving Iraq too early
