The United Nations

The United Nations is a group made up of 192 countries whose goal is to achieve world peace. The United Nations is made up of five administrative bodies- the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, Secretariat, and the International Court of Justice. The General Assembly meets yearly and is run by the Secretary-General (Ban Ki-moon of South Korea) and an elected president of one of the member countries. Some of the important questions that are voted on during these meeting are recommendations of peace and security, election and expulsion of members to the different bodies, and budget. There has to be a two-thirds majority vote from those present and voting for a resolution to be passed. The Security Council’s main duty is to keep peace and security among countries. The Security Council is made up of 15 member states. Five of which are permanent. The permanent members of the Security Council are China, France, Russia, The United Kingdom, and The United States. The other countries currently are Austria, Burkina Faso, Costa Rica, Croatia, Libya, Japan, Mexico, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam. The ten temporary seats are held for 2 years then the General Assembly votes on the new members. The Secretariat does just as its name suggests. It finds information and provides facilities for the other bodies, and carries out duties for other four bodies. The Secretariat is lead by the Secretary-General with help of international staff voted in by the General Assembly. The International Court of Justice is located in The Hague, Netherlands in the Peace Palace. It is the main judicial part of the United Nations. The Peace Palace shares a building with the Hague Academy of International Law. Most of the judges for the International Court of Justice are either alumni or former faculty members of the academy. It deals with disputes among countries and warfare crimes. The Economic and Social Council assists the General Assembly. They mostly promote peace and cooperation between countries. It is made up of 54 members who are voted in by the General Assembly and serve a three-year term. The president is elected for a one-year term.My opinion on the different bodies of the United Nations is that they seem really organized, which they definitely would have to be since the work they do involves pretty much the whole world. I don’t think one body is more important than another. After reading through all their duties I thought they were all equally important and really worked together to keep things running smoothly. I think the most fun body to be a part of would be the International Court of Justice because I saw a picture of the Peace Palace and it seems pretty sweet.
