The Typewriter (6.1)

The typewriter was first issued on June 23, 1868. It was invented by Christopher Latham Sholes. He was born February 14, 1819 in Mooresburg, Pennsylvania. He died February 17, 1890 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was an American.

The typewriter is a machine the types letters on an piece of ribbon or paper. The typewriter was actually revolutionize. The first one was was marketed by the Remington Arms company in 1873. The bars within the typewriter that printed the words were sluggish and jammed often. In order to fix this Sholes arranged the letters in alphabetical order and put more space between them. Sholes arrangement increased the time it took for the typist to type words, because the typist used the "hunt-and-peck" method. Although Sholes never imagined that typing would be faster than actually writing it out.

The first one was called "Sholes & Glidden Type Writer. They worked on it from 1874-1878. It was not a great success at first, no more that 5,000 were sold. It was said that the typewriter automatically printed numbers in the books. The original was decorated with colorful decal and gold.I think that the typewriter really made a difference for a lot of people. Even though at first it wasn't very popular, overall it made a difference.
