The Revolutionary War

The Revolutionary War was the war that gave the Americans their freedom from Great Britain. The Americans disliked that Great Britain was passing laws and trying to take control over the thirteen colonies. War broke out on April 19th, 1775, starting with the battle at Lexington and Concord.

Great Britain placed troops in Boston and this was claimed to be a rebellion. The thirteen colonies were not prepared for war at all because they did not have a national government. The continental congress was the first national government, they then organized an army and a navy. A wealthy Virginian landowner, George Washington, was voted commander of the army and was later voted president.

On July 4th, 1776 the thirteen colonies declared their independence from Great Britain and adopted the Declaration of Independence. This lead to us becoming the United States of America.
