The Mastery Chapter 8 Questionaire

1. What did the progressives do to make the workplace safer? Before the laws came out, the workplace was very dangerous. Because of the heavy machinery, the workers often got injured and could even possibly lose limbs. Back then, the workers were not covered for injuries in the workplace, so basically they were just fired because they were now useless. During the progressive era, the workers were given wokers compensation which just kinda covered them. They were also given earmuffs and stuff to protect them. Today there are the child labor laws, and there are laws against the tools that children can use. OSHA- started in 1970, gov't organization that goes around checking out businesses and can actually shut them down if they find them to be unsafe. -Zach Harris2. What did the progressives do to help end or reduce child labor? Before child labor was very common, this is including young children, from ages five to nine even. Bosses thought that children were ideal workers because of their small agile fingers and they were willing to work for lower wages. Immigrants often sent their young children to work so they could have money in the poor times. Children were very likely to have accidents in results of fatigue. Child labor lowered wages for all workers. In 1916, the Keating-Owen act was passed that prohibited the transportation of child-made goods across the state line. This was declared unconstitutional two years later because it interfeered with the state's rights. By the 1920's, most states had banned child labor. Today there are still a lot of strict laws with child labor. -Whitney Gross/Mr. Bruns3. What is prohibition? Why did people want prohibition? What tactics were used to bring about prohibition?Prohibition- is the banning of something whether it be alcohol, rock and roll, or paper clips? In this case its alcohol. People wanted prohibition bacause there were not many laws against alcohol and people thought that all the public drunkeness was morally wrong, so people basically wanted an end to this. All the drunks was causing a lot of crime suck as people using the black market and peopel cheating on their spouses. Religious women were the main pushers of prohibitions.Carrie A. Nation was a HUGE pusher of prohibition. She was like six feet tall and 170 pounds. She was a very stern woman who did not like drinking, tobacco, or fashionably dressed women. Ha (: She was someone who went into bars and chewed out all of the people that were drinking and would even smash the place with the ax. She started first by just simple protesting, but then took things further. Nation began to pray to God for an answer. She said that God answered her and told her to go to Kiowa and took smashers? She began to throw rocks and smash the salloons, then Kansas was hit with a tornado and she took this as an approval of her actions. She was arrested numberous times. Also, there were a lot of public announcements that talked about the evils of alcohol. One of the big things that got supporters was that supporters thought that taking a drink or two was fine because they were just trying to get rid of drunkeness but then alcohol was completely banned and that made a lot of people, even the people that were for it at first, angry. This was lost during the Civil war but was later brought back up. The eighteenth ammendment banned the distribution of alcohol in all states. This banning led to a lot of organized crimes.During this time the prohibitionists realized their idea wasn't working and people still had their home-made alcohol, "moonshine" they got back to congress and had the Volstead act made so then alcohol was completely illegal except for in church and for medicine. This started mobs that sold alcohol, and other underground bars. At the time jazz music was hated because it was linked with the private bars called speak-easies. In 1933 the 21st ammendment was made to take out the 18th ammendment.Today- now every state allows alcohol. some states kept the prohibitions a while after it was stopped. today the alcohol restrictions rely on the counties, because there are dry counties. The drinking age is 21, which has been changes a lot over the years4. What did progressives do to help workers reduce the number of hours they had to work?Muller v. Oregon- court case taken Curt Muller forced one of his female workers to work over ten hours in one day, taken to the supreme court and ruled that they keep a restricted ten hours work day.Bunting v. Oregon- court case taken because of a group of people including males that worked over ten hours in one day, it ruled by the supreme court then people were now able to work over ten hours in one day.-Erin5. What did progressives do to make our country more democratic?Secret ballot made the country more democratic. Initiative and a referendum- allows people to start a bill, gives power to the people. Initiative- people starting a bill, referendum- people voting on the bill. recall- direct primaries became more common, these reduced the political machine's power. I'm hoping when I read chapter nine this will make more sense because I am extremely confused. All of these things give the common people power. There was no more rich people electing rich people.6. What is women's suffrage? What approachers did women use to gain the right to vote? Before women were known as second class citizens.During the progressive era women held conventions and had people sign petitions against women's suffrage.3 part strategy for womens suffrage1. Give women the right to vote in their state.2. 14th ammendment3. Women pushed for a national constitutional ammendment to get women the right to voteToday there is basically no difference between the rights of women and men.-Kyla7. What did the progressives do to bring about better wages for workers? Before the progressiva era there was atrocious pay. Some people were payed around 15 cents per hour.Minimum Wages.Henry Ford- 5 dollar day. 8 hours a day for 5 dollars per day. This was during the progressive era and was considered good. Now minimum wage is about $7.508. What is segregation? What did progressives do to help African-Americans?Segregation is the seperation of the races. There were two main cases with segregation, those were Plessy v. Fergeson in 1896, and Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas in 1953. Plessy v. Ferguson ruled the for thinfgs to be "seperate but equal" when in reality everthing was seperate but unequal. In the Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas the Plessy v. Fergusen case was overruled in which things were no longer made seperate. At first african americans thought the problem in the whole "seprerate but equal" theory was the fact that they were unequal, but they soon came to realize that the problem was indeed that they were seperated, and came to knowledge that if they were not seperated, then things would be more equal.9. What did the progressives do to make food and drugs safer for the people of the U.S.?Foods without labels/expiration dates. Passed laws that said food had to have lables, this was started by the USDA. It was made so people would not get sick from like bad meat and stuff. There was a book that was wrote to keep make people aware of the nasty meat. The book was called The Jungle. In the book the author gave examples of what was going into the meat. When people ate meat in those days, people were not eating only the beef but also thigs like rats, feces, rat poisons, saw duct, ect. Upton Sinclaire was the author of The Jungle.Back in those days, I'm thinking I would be a vegetarian. There was the Meat Inspection Act to make sure that meat was safe to eat.Back in the days there were a lot of medicines that were not actual drugs, they were just sugar, and also there were medicines that contained addictive drugs. These were part of the Pure Food and Drug Act which made foods safer.Today they have a lot more information about foods on the labels.-Greg Conry10. What did progressives (Teddy Roosevelt) do to help conserve land and resources in our country? The passed the Newlands Act-The newlands act sold western lands and made dams for irrigation. The act was passed in 1902.TR was the president that set aside the most land... by far.11. What did progressives do to regulate businesses in the United States?Before- before there were monopolies, the businesses were mainly in control. The policy of the united states on businesses was the laissez-faire, other known as "hands off." The monopolies controlled the farms and the rivers.During- Roosevelt called himself the "Trust-Buster" The Sherman Anti-Trust Act. Roosevelt was a president that sided with the common workers, instead of the big mine thing or whatever. We now interupt this blog with an announcement from Mr. Bruns... you can make a "trust-busters" video instead of a normal blog, or you can make it for extra credit. Moving on...... The ICC was the Interstate Commerce Commision which formed the Interstate Commerce Act which enforced the railroads companies to set a certain rate for people to make sure that everyone was being fair. According to Mr. Bruns, Teddy Roosevelt was a stud. Wildrow Wilson and the Clayton Anti-Trust Act- made when the Sherman Anti Trust Act failed, this act allowed the government to break up monopolies. The Federal Trade Commission- this stopped big businesses from doing unfair things, and it would breakup companies that were doing theings that were unfairly monopolistic.President Taft broke up more trust than Roosevelt, and Wilson broke up more than Taft.Today there is still the federal trade commission, the ICC was shutdown in 1995. The remaining functions of the ICC were transferred to another little act thing. The FCT continues consumer protection and cohersive monopolies.-Tara Benner12. How did progressives (chhhhhhh) change the tariff laws in our country? What was/were the progressives philosiphies on tariffs. Descrive the Federal Reserve System.Generally progressives wanted to lower the tarriffs because it broght up the competition and it benefited the common person and lowered the prices of goods. President Taft agreed to lower the tarriffs but he made the Payne-Aldrich Tarriff which increased many tarriffs and this upsetted a lot of progressives. President Taft also removed land the Roosevelt had previously set aside for conservation which really ticked Roosevelt off. Due to the problems that Taft caused, the republicans tried to split into two groups called the old-gaurd republicans and the progressive republicans. This split gaurenteed a democratic win because the republican results were split up.13. Describe the impact that aid organizations had in our country to help the poor people. They set up settlement houses for the poor, opened things like the ymca, opened public libraries...There was a major unbalace in the income and how the people lived. The upperclass people were totally always in order, but the majority of the people were in the lower classes. Many turned to "socialism." For the economic reform, progressives called for the regulation of railroads, child labor laws, women and men working hours reduced, and the workmen's compensation.14. What is socialism? And how did it get started in the United States?Socialism- came to america from the German immigrants around the mid-1800's. Socialism-government runs the businesses in order make it more equal for everyone.Eugene V. Debbs ran for president five times, he was a socialist. He even ran for president while in prison, campaigning from his jail cell. Socialists despised capitalists. Most socialists share the view that capitalism unfairly concentrates power and wealth among a small segment of society that controls capital and derives its wealth through exploitation, creates an unequal society, does not provide equal opportunities for everyone to maximise their potentialities and does not utilise technology and resources to their maximum potential nor in the interests of the public. Socialists wanted to make things equal for everybody, and this idea was very attractive to the middle and to the lower classes.Socialists were extreme progressives.-Ian Odell15. What/who were muckrakers? And what impact did they have on our country? The muckrakers were people the exposed issues. The muchrakers today are more today called investigative journalists. The term was first used by Theodore Roosevelt, it came from a book called Pilgrims Progress. Some muckrakers were Lincoln Steffens, who wrote about Boss Tweed, Ida Tarbell who wrote about the manipulation of trusts, and Upton Sinclair who published The Jungle. There are still muckrakers today.Muckrakers expose a lot of things in society and make it to puch acts against our country's flaws.-Brandon Roberts16. What did businesses do to bring better efficiency to their business?"Time is money." Frederick Taylor did many studies about efficiency and time management. Studies could have been very complex, or very simple. Something as simple on doing a study on the route you should take to get from point A to point B to save the most time and be the most efficient. There was the assembly line that was invented, but this caused a lot of people to quit because it was boring. Henry Ford began to pay his workers $5 everyday, and this caused people to work there longer and to but the company's products. Progressives worked for efficiency in all levels of government. Having happy workers brought a lot more efficiency.17, Describe the major social changes the effected women during the progressive era?Before- women didn't really work. single poor women worked long hours, married women stayed home to raise children and do housework.During- 14th ammendment- women could vote. They began to make clubs and groups for women's social changes. More women graduated highschool and went to college, these were mainly the outspoken ones. Now women and mainly equal with men, they are able to vote and do most jobs that they desire.-Steph Schmitz18. What did local and state government do to reform itself during the progressive era?People began to move away from the political machines. Things like secret ballots, initiative, referendum, and recall reformed government. 17th Ammendment. The Penalton Civil Service act got rid of patronage, also it made it so people had to take a test for their jobs.Woodrow Wilson... won the 1912 election. He was a progressive democrat, he was more progressive than Teddy Roosevelt.11. Sherman Anti Truse ActWilson passed the Clayton Anti Trust Act in 1914 that could break up monopolies and gave labor unions the right to exitst.Rederal Trade Commision was established in 1914, this investigated companies for monopolic practices.12. Underwood taffiff in 1913 drastically cut tarriff rates for the first time since the civil war. a tarriff is a tax on imported goods. the sixteenth ammendment was ratified in 1913 allowing for a graduated income taxthe federal reserve system was developed in 191. This system strengthened banks, allowed for a way to control the amount of the dollar in circulation, it broke the country into twelve districts with each having one Federal Reserve Bank. The federal reserve system can basically control inflation and deflation. The FRB was a "banker's bank" and this system is still around today. While Woodrow Wilson was president, there were three ammendments that were passed, the 17, 18, and 19. Those included the direct election of senators, prohibition, and women's vote. He did not do much for the african americans, he reinstated segregation in Washington D.C., but all in all his presidency was a great one.
