The Kennedy’s inspired Americans with their optimistic political ideas. John F. Kennedy was the second youngest and first catholic president elected by the U.S. He appointed his younger brother, Robert, to the position of U.S. Attorney General.
John F. Kennedy set goals that we still value. He called for space exploration, civil rights laws, and volunteerism. It was President Kennedy who said Americans would land a man on the moon and return him safely to earth. Although at first he hesitated to support new civil rights laws, eventually he called for laws to protect the rights of African Americans citizens. Also, he began the Peace Corps, which sent Americans to volunteer to help developing countries.
As Attorney General, an idealistic Robert Kennedy fought against organized crime and union labor corruptions. He is known for saying, “Why?’ I dream things that never were and say, ’Why not ?” From 1965-1968, Robert served as a U.S. Senator from New York.
To the country dismay, both men were assassinated, President Kennedy in 1963 and Senator Robert Kennedy in 1968. Their deaths damaged people’s feelings of optimism and idealism about the country.John's Funeral
