

1966- National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act
This act was meant to provide the federal government with more power to set new safety standards for motor vehicles and road trafic safety. This act also helped create the National Highway Safety Bureau. This act was also a response by the government to the increasing numbers in cars on the roads and the deaths. Vehicles were also now built with new safety features like head rests, energy absoring steering wheels, shatter resistant windshields, and safety belts were improved. Breakaway signs and utility poles were put to good use now. Signs and gaurd rails were now illuminated more to cut down on accidents.
1966- Highway Safety Act
This created a national highway safety program to lower the death rate on the nations roads. It also gave the US permission to us some federal funds to create and strengthen highway traffic safety programs. It was brought up because of the publics concern on the major issue of the growing number of deaths that were occuring on the United States roads. From the year 1960 to 1965 the number of fatalities on the nations roads tripled. It touched on many different things having to do with traffic safety like driver education, driver licensing, vehicle registration, vehicle inspection, highway design and maintnance, and traffic control devices.
1966- Department of Transportation
The United States Department of Transporation oversees all the interstate travel in all US states and some Canadian provinces. the U.S. DOT's main goal is to ensure the United States with a safe, fast, efficient, accessible and convenient transportation system that meats the national standards and interests. This also raises the quality of life for mostly all American people.
1966- Truth in Packaging Act
These were obviously some pretty important acts. They lowered death rates greatly. Saved lots of lives with new safety features in vehicles and traffic laws.
