While more settlers moved Westward, they wanted to accuire more land. This land that they wanted to accuire was home to many Native Americans, and they were not going to let White men walk all over them. The government put up many restrictions against Native Americans, allowing them freedoms, but only freedoms they could have if they moved onto reservations. A reservation is set up land that Native Americans had to begin with, but slimmed down a bit. Some were big some were small, but this land was given to them so they could do whatever they wanted to do on these lands. It realy sounds better than what they are though, alot of the land was taken from the Natives, so this still angered them and they revolted alot on the Military and Government. The life on the reservation were much diffrent than the wide, open range the Native Americans were much used to. They could hunt, just like they did, but if they crossed lines and were still doing that, it was an infraction. They could do traditional things, such as rain dancing and cerimonial things. But if they did that outside the reservation, that was an infraction. Many hate crimes were commited against Indians, such as rape, assult, and even killing. Some indians went to the reservations, but most refused. Like the Sioux, most refused. The Sioux put up a fight for several years, and Chief Sitting Bull and Chief Redcloud refused to go to reservations. They were both killed in fighting for there rights in a skirmish of what today is South Dakota. One of the major problems with reservations is that they bring poverty. They are given the poorest land, and are expected to live off of what they grow or hunt, which is not alot.
