The Boy in the Striped Pjamas

Brooke and I watched our World War II movie over the weekend. We watched The Boy in the Striped Pjamas. It was mostly about a young eight year old German boy named Bruno. He lived with his sister Gretel and family in a very nice house. This was during World War II. His family moved because of his father’s job as a top ranked German officer. Their new home was in the country side and very close to a concentration camp. Bruno wasn’t very fond of moving and was often very bored, but he ended up adapting later on. He enjoyed playing outside and one day he while he was running through the forest he stopped in front of the concentration camp. Here he met a small Jewish boy named Schmuel who wore what Bruno called “striped pajamas”. Bruno and the boy had long talks and played games such as checkers and ball. One day the boy was cleaning in Bruno’s house and Bruno thought it would be nice to sneak him food. One of his father’s men saw this and asked Bruno if Schmuel had stole it, Bruno lied. The next day Bruno went back to the camp to visit Schmuel and noticed he was very hurt. He apologized several times and promised to help Schmuel find his father. Bruno was forbidden to go near the camp, but did not understand why. He had watched his father give a presentation about the camp. By watching the video it had looked like the people were treated very well and had lots of fun. This was all a lie and upset Bruno’s mother very badly and Bruno still didn’t understand what was happening. Bruno went back to visit Schmuel again. He was supposed to bring him a sandwhich and Schmuel was to bring the striped pjamas. Bruno had dropped the sandwhich by accident but it no longer mattered. He dug a hole and crawled beneath the fencing. Then he put on the pjamas and together the two boys went to search for Schmuel’s father. They were inside a cabin when some officers started pushing the people towards a building. Inside the building they were to take off their clothing. The people thought they were going to shower but it was really a gas room where they were going to kill them. Bruno’s parents noticed he was missing and tried running to his rescue. They sprinted to the camp and found his clothes. His father heard the siren for the gas room to go off. He tried to tell them to stop but it was too late. Sadly Bruno, Schmuel and all the other Jewish men were killed. Bruno’s family was devestated and bawling. This part made me cry as well. It was so sad!! I didn’t think I would really enjoy a World War II movie but this one was very interesting and I liked it a lot. It let you get a feel of what a Jewish concentration camp was like and also the life of a German officer’s son. It was very intense especially during the end even though it was rather sorrowful. I am actually very excited to watch our next movie!
