This week Erin and I watched the Boy in the Striped Pajamas. Poor Bruno was an eight-year-old little boy who just happen to be growing up with the wrong family. His father was incharge of an extermination camp for the Jews. Bruno, his older sister, mother, and father move to a house near the camp, but the kids do not know what kind of camp it is. They had a Jewish slave in which Brunos father treated horribly, but was a really nice person. Bruno could see a fence outside his window and asked his father what that was and who the people he saw were. His father told him "they're not really people" and Bruno is forrbidden to go there. But of course, what little boy wouldnt rebel and do something he is told not to?
Bruno goes to the fence and meets Shmuel who just happens to be the same age as Bruno. Shmuel tells Bruno he is Jewish and that Jewish people are being imprissioned and put into camps like these by soldiers. At this time, Bruno is somewhat questioning whether or not his dad is a "good guy" in all of this. Bruno's father was watching a film about "concentration camps" that Bruno just happen to peek in on. The camps looked completely fine and no one was doing anything wrong. Bruno goes to visit Shmuel very often and brings him food a lot too.

Bruno's father hires a tutor for his sister and him, who is actually just brain washing them into being Nazis. Telling them that Jews are the cause for all the problems in the world, and they werent even people. But Bruno didn't know what to think because Shmuel and their Jewish servant were both very nice and most definately people. Shmuel just happens to be the next servant in the house and Bruno sneaks him some food, but they got caught and Shmuel is suspected of stealing food. But Shmuel says that Bruno gave him the food and that they are friends, but Bruno denies it because hes scared to face his father. Shmuel hasnt been seen in the house or by the fence, but eventually he is seen at the fence with a black eye.
A talk about moving comes up because Bruno's father believes its a bad place for kids to grow up, but Bruno doesn't want to because of Shmuel. Bruno gives Shmuel the bad news of moving the next day, and Shmuel tells Bruno that his father is missing. Bruno said he would help Shmuel find his father the next day and he would sneak into the camp. The next day Shmuel brings Bruno striped pajamas and Bruno digs a hole under the fence. Bruno changes and they begin to walk through the camp in search of Shmuel's father. The boys are asked to go into a building for a "shower" and asked to get undressed. At this time, Bruno's sister informs their father Bruno is missing. He finds his clothes and hole and rushes into the camp to find his son. But when he gets to the building where thet were, it was too late, they have been gassed.
Over all this movie was very sad, but honestly, I could see this really happening during WWII. Its sad to think something like that could happen, but it really could.
