A day before the invasion, there was an airstrike on the Iraqi Presidential Palace. The 2003 invasion of Iraq started on March 20, 2003. It was led by the US, and backed by British forces and other smaller forces. That first invasion phase lasted from March 20 to May 1, with four countries contributing soldiers, those being the US, UK, Austrailia, and Poland. The invasion marked the beeginning of the Iraq War.Bush said that the reason for invading Iraq was to find and destroy and weapons of mass destruction, end Saddam Hussein's support for terrorism, and free the Iraqi people. There weren't any WMDs, and we did take down Saddam, which was good.A poll was done on three topics in the US. 64% of people thought it was good that we went to war with Iraq, and I would have to agree that it was probably the best move we could've made. 63% of people thought it would be best for Bush to find a diplomatic solution rather than going to war. That would've been really good, if it would work. You never know what would happen with that. 62% of people thought terrorism would increase if we went to war, and that is really scary to think about. On February 15, 2003, three million people gathered in Rome to protest going to war in Iraq. That rally is actually listed in the Guiness Book of Records as the largest anti-war rally ever. 30,000 protests took place between January 3 and April 12, having a turnout of about 36 million people. I think it was kind of a good idea to invade Iraq, but I wish there could've been some kind of compromise to make the protestors happier.
