We started with Nick's Presentation6-2-What impact did railroads have on the US?Transported goods, created new towns and cities, helped establish Time Zones.-Why were many people upset with the railroads? The railroads were misusing the land grants that they received by selling land to other railroads and they charged different people different rates to use the railroads.-What did the Grangers or government do to regulate the railroads? They elected political figures to work to protect the interests of the people. They made it so that there was a maximum rate on all passengers and freight. These laws however were state by state and weren't for all of the United States. Mun v Illionis was a case to back up these laws saying that they can set rates on the railroad but then they reversed the law which led to the Interstate Commerce Act which made rates the same throughout the U.S.The Challenges of Urbanization7-2Why did cities grow so quickly in the late 1800's and early 1900's?There was the promise of work in cities, farmers went to the cities because the new technology required less workers, it was supposedly easier to live in citiesWhat problems did cities face due to the rapid increase in population? There weren't enough houses for the people, transportation was not adequate enough to move people to jobs and homes, it was hard to get enough water to people and there were major sanitation issues. Also there were a lot of criminals and crime was a major problem. Fires were another big issue because of little water to fight fires and not enough firefighters to combat the fires that would outbreak and houses were all built out of wood which spread fire quickly. What did some people do to try to help the bad situation in the cities?Established police and firefighting agencies. Established settlement houses for the poor and imigrants that had nowhere to go and helped them with their problems which were run by women who were educated.
