Sri Lanka Crisis

Thanks to the media, we rarely hear about anything other than the War on Terror, the presidential election, and the ever-failing economy. Unless you deliberately search for other happenings in the world, you wont hear about anything else. src="https://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/3310249186?profile=original" alt="" width="500" height="375"/>

January 18 2009, 5:08 A.M. Sri Lankan forces captured a heavily armed Tamil rebel camp in the war ravaged north of Sri Lanka. The southern part of Sri lanka are home to rolling mountains, beach side cities, and many small and large farms. The government forces are closing in on the rebel forces who have been fighting since 1983 to establish an independent state for minority Tamils, who have suffered marginalization (confining a group of society to a lower status) by government majorities controlled by the Sinhalese. There are currently around 250,000 civilians in the war zone that the rebels claim to be protecting. However, the rebels refuse to allow any civilians to leave. As a result, over 70,000 civilians have been killed during this war.Saturday, soldiers captured a rebel boat-manufacturing factory near Maruthampuvel where troops found two larger attack vessels and seven small boats used by rebels for suicide attacks. The boats were being used primarily for suicide attacks in naval waters. No rebel spokesmen have been contacted yet as all reporters are banned from the war zone.

When I first read this article I was suprised. You can't help but know that there are wars going on all over the world 24/7, but until you really get educated about it it really has no effect on you. I can see how the rebels feel so strongly about wanting to become an independent nation, state, province, or faction, but I feel absolutely no sympathy for them when they intentionally put innoccent lives in jeopardy to get what they want. No good can come from eternal fighting. I think that the Tamil Tiger Rebels need to open their eyes a bit to see the transformation that the wrold is going through. So much more could be accomplished if those seeking liberation used the time and energy that they are currenly using to cause destruction, would use that time and energy for a greater good. A simple petition would be a great start towards liberation. Eventually the group would have the support of many others and could potentially get what they want without any cause for bloodshed.Well, thats my blog and that is what's happening in the other neck of the woods.http://www.syracuse.com/newsflash/index.ssf?/base/international-33/1232266745165440.xml&storylist=topstories

  • You put some very good thought into this. The Tamils are in a tough spot. I'm sure they feel like unless they take up drastic action(violence), they have no hope of ever getting independence.

Look at what the US did to get independence. We fought for it. So is it wrong what the Tamils are doing? Just asking to get you to think about it.

What is the US policy on this situation?
