Isabella Baumbfree, better known as Sojourner Truth, was a black woman who became popular in the 1840's and 1850's. She was born and sold to a White Colonel in New York, she could only speak Dutch. Around 1840, she started to travel across the U.S. speaking to many people on how, "she is a woman".
The thing about her speaches, is that she emphisized on being a woman. Not only did she mean it in right that she is a woman entitled to rights, but how she is an African American woman. In 1851, she went to a women's rights rally in Ohio, and gave a famous speech " Aint I a Woman?". This contained her opinions on women's rights, and became famous for what she said.
In 1857, she bought a house outside Battle Creek, Michigan. During this time period, Sojourner Recruited many black troops for the Union. She played a big part in the Black Enrollment in the Union Army. She also tried to pursue many rights for blacks, including owning property and various rights white folk had. In 1883 she past away. She had many great accomplishments in her life, and played an important role in the rights for blacks I think.
