Congress passed the Soil Conservation and Domestic Allotment Act in 1935 in an attempt to to control the ever growing problem of soil erosion and agricultrual overproduction. The purpose of this act was to provide control and protection of soil erosion and to protect natural resources. Also they wanted to control flooding and prevent destruction of resivours. The Soil Conservation and Domestic Allotment Act made the secretary of agriculture to study and research soil erosion and ways to prevent it from happening. The act established the Soil Conservation Services now called the Natural Resources Conservation Service. The Soil Conservation Services conducted a national program of soil erosion protection. This allowed technical and financial aid to farmers who participated in conservation practices. These practices included contour planting, strip croping, erosion resistant crops, and building terraces. Some farmers feared that the federal government would take too much control and possibly take over direct control of the farmers. The act helped to decrease the overproduction of crops by paying farmers to plant "soil conserving crops" instead of "soil depleating crops." The act stated that soil depleating crops to be the same as surplus crops. Even surpul crops that had soil conserving characteristics were classified as soil depleating. The act basically paid the farmers to reduce the amount of surplus crops inorder to lower overall production of that crop. The Soil Conservation and Allotment act was a good act to pass becasue it is really good for the environment. It really does preserve the good soil we have here in the u.s.
