Settlers began moving west in the year of 1620 until 1870 when Jamestown was founded. The settlers goal was to turn 400 millions acres of forests and prairies into land that was capable of being farmed. After finishing the first 400 acres of land, they began on the next 400. The next 400 acres of land only took them 30 years. The completion of the trans continental made this process move more quickly. The process of making railroads began in 1850 when the federal government made large land grants towards the railroads. 170 million acres, costing half a billion dollars was being used for railroads in the west.
