Tuesday- 9/11 talk today.  We watched a video about Bush. 

Wednesday- We finsihed the video

    1. Calmness
  3. Why did the Secret Service refuse to allow President Bush to go back to Washington D.C. right away?
    1. They were scared for his safety. 
    2. He would have been a target
  4. What did the US government/military do to to ensure another attack did not occur?
    1. Made all planes land and shoot remaining air planes
  5. Why was President Bush sent to Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha?
    1. It had an underground bunker
  6. Why did President Bush eventually insist on going back to Washington D.C. later that day against the will of the Secret Service?
    1. He wanted to give his adress in DC not the bunker
    2. They may think that he is scared

    1. Bush did not want them to focus on the pass, but more on the future

 Thursday- The Great Plains was known as the "Great American Dessert"

Manifest Destiny- We should be able to move West, it's a god given right. 

Why did settlers/people move to the Great Plains/West? 

  1. Manifest Destiny- We have the right to move West- God Given
  2. Natural Resorces- Gold, Oil
  3. Farming
  4. Cattle Ranching
  5.  Sheep Hearding
  6. Homestead Act- 160 acres of land to anyone who would farm
  7. Mining- Gold and Silver (people wanted to be rich)
  8. Working on the railroad- (Real reason)
  9. Hunting/Trapping/Adventure
  10. Mountain Men- like Native Americans (moved to and lived in Mountains) 
  11. US Military (mainly calvary- troops on horses)

Describe a cowboy's life.

  • Peaked between 1867- 1880
  • Very romanticized period of time in US history
  • Life was lonely and dangerous
    • Native American Attacks
    • Wild Animals
    • Crossing Rivers
    • Lack of Food
  • 25% were former slaves

Describe the importance of the buffalo to Native Americans and how the buffalo were destroyed.

How did the US government deal with Native Americans in the mid to late 1800's? What were their policies?

Open Range: An area of land where cattle roamed free

Long Drives; Cattle had to be driven from Texas to states further North

Cow Town: Destination of the cattle drivers where cattle would be sold

Dodge City: In Kansas

  • What happens in Dodge City stays in Dodge City!
  • Drinking 
  • Gambling
  • Fights
  • Prostituion
  • Gunfights/Duels
    • Took Law into Own Hands

Law and Order:

  • Dodge City
