  • Constitution was made to get rid of Articles of Confederation
    • Sets up government
    • Protects our rights (take away rights)
    • Three Branches:
      • Legislative (Congress- Senate and House of Representatives)makes laws
      • Executive- President- enforces
      • Judicial- Supreme Court- interprets laws
    • 27 Amendments
  • Western Boundary- Mississippi River
    • Louisiana Purchase for $15 million 
    • Purchased by Thomas Jefferson
    • Florida from Spain
    • Oregon Territory (Treaty with Great Britain)
  • Texas War for Independence 1830's
    • Invited people in, but Mexican government said you must be Catholic and no slaves
    • Battle of Alamo (Mexico won)
    • Texas was an independent country (lone star republic for about a decade)
    • Rio Grande was area in between Texas and Mexico
    • Mexican Session ($20 million)
      • California, Nevada, Utah, Part of Arizona and Colorado and New Mexico
  • 1860 Election (Abe Lincoln)
    • South were the Confederates because the southern states want to have more power
    • North wanted South to join back in the country
    • North had a better advantage than the South
    • Reconstruction-
      • 10 year Office Act
      • Republican Radical Reconstruction (12 years)
      • Set up schools, raised taxes, built railroads, industrialized the South, helped ex-slaves
      • 13th no slavery, 14th blacks were citizens, and 15th blacks could vote Amendments passed
      • Jim Crow laws- Racists things happened (Segregation)
    • The Compromise of 1877
