5-2

today we will start our project presentations over 5 through 8. today we started off with the settling on the great plains. in 1862 congress passed the pacific railroad bill which granted public land and funds to build a transcontinental railroad. work on the railroads was hard and somethimes dangerous and it was hard to attract workers. the majority of the workers on the central pacific was chinese people but both companies recruited chinese. while construction both companies raced to see who could lay the most trackseach day. the day that both tracks met was in 1869 at the golden spike in utah. the homestead act was signed by abraham lincoln in 1862. this bill gave rights to any citizen to have 160 acres of land, if they stayed there for five years it was their land for free. claimers of the act didnt need to have equipent or know how to farm to get this land and that made some people go in debt because they didnt know what they were doing or didnt have the money to buy the right supplies or there was not a plentiful water supply. there were cattlers who were fenced in open land, miners and wood cutters took natural resources. the settlers built their homes into hill because there wernt many trees, this had its advantagse and disadvantages. advantages were it was hot in winter and gold in summer, disadvantages were every time it rained it leaked into the houses. the women worked along side the men in the field plowing and planting. they also shaved the sheep so they could use the sheeps wool to make clothes, beside that they did the cleaning, cooking and they raised the children.
